JOSE ANTONIO SANCHO

Using a box of photographic paper from the 1950s (which was already unusable at the time: it had an unsalvageable chemical haze, but the paper was of very good quality and had a high-silver emulsion), the artist created the series Quimigrafías (Quimigraphies), which relates to the first experimental prints that Jose Antonio Sancho made in the early 1980s, emulating Man Ray’s x-rays and polarizations.

The process is quite complex; the artist handcrafts the developers using his own formulas, fusing classic techniques with modern reproduction processes. Each work is unique; the characteristics of the medium and the processing, which involve chance and control, are unrepeatable. Another characteristic is that there is no camera involved in the production; the work is based on physical objects, meaning they are at a 1:1 scale.
